Start with the workshop loop

Abyssal Lapidary places you in Vermilion House, a fading jewelry workshop in the underground city of Fathomholm. The demo’s central progression links four activities: appraise rough ore, extract and facet gems, craft jewelry, then use commissions, sales and displays to develop the workshop.

The supernatural story sits underneath that business loop. This guide avoids story spoilers and limits mechanics to the supplied demo materials.

Buy a small first batch

Cited beginner guidance recommends buying two or three stones rather than ten. A smaller purchase limits the resources tied up while you learn the tools and commission rules.

Inspect each stone with the loupe before paying. Appraisal is part of the decision, not a cosmetic step: you are judging whether the rough material is worth processing before committing workshop money and time.

Read the commission before cutting

Check a commission’s requirements before accepting it and before choosing a cut. Documented beginner pitfalls include damaged gems, failed commission requirements and the workshop allure gate. A valuable stone is not automatically the right stone for a particular order.

The October 23 demo update expanded cut filters and faceting estimates, which makes it easier to compare options in that version. Exact values and later unlock requirements should be checked in your build because demo systems can change.

Extract, then facet

Use the extraction tools to expose gemstones while limiting damage. The documented tool set includes hammers, chisels, gouges, shovels, saws, drills and acid. Version 0.2.15 added suitability and efficiency hints, so read the current tool information rather than relying on older playtest advice.

Faceting becomes available through progression. At the faceting table, the chosen shape and style affect whether the result matches a commission, and quality affects value. For delicate-material cautions and practical checks, see the demo tips.

Develop jewelry and the showroom

The jewelry bench opens later as your license climbs. Display cabinets add allure to the workshop, connecting finished work with shop progression. The demo also includes workshop upgrades, a calendar and a business log.

If you cannot find a system mentioned by an older playtest guide, check the demo version first. The public demo rebuilt the talent tree, license advancement and perception systems, and playtest saves do not transfer.

A simple first-session checklist

  1. Install the separate Steam demo and note its version.
  2. Buy two or three stones and inspect each one.
  3. Read commission requirements before accepting or cutting.
  4. Use current tool suitability hints and avoid unnecessary breakage.
  5. Progress the license to reach faceting and jewelry work.
  6. Use display cabinets and workshop records to understand progression.

The wiki hub maps the remaining status and reference pages. Launch-only systems and numbers are to be confirmed at launch; this guide will expand after the full release rather than invent them now.
